FROM SITE

CELL - Initiators of Incidents - was founded in 1997 and is a Rotterdam-based organisation, operating on a local and international level. CELL initiates interdisciplinary projects within the fields of media, art and culture predominantly in public domains, in all kinds of locations, using all genres of mediums - words, imagery and sound translate from Rotterdam to Rio and from sidewalks to the World Wide Web. CELL refers to her projects as 'incidents', which can be short lived, prolonged or permanent experiences.

These days, artists increasingly move between various disciplines (visual arts, film, modern technology, science and design) and the fixed borders between 'traditional art' and 'what lies beyond' blur more and more. In these changing times, CELL strives to seize these chances and opportunities and provide a platform for artists, scientists and designers to probe beyond their traditional disciplines and explore these frontiers.

CELL encourages artists to develop project works on relevant public platforms ranging from exhibitions, films and the Internet. While specific content and size of each assignment may vary, they are mainly interdisciplinary by nature, with a strong focus on (new) media.

CELL develops the project-concept and produces it from beginning to end. Both concept-development and production require close collaboration with the participating artist(s) and CELL is always open to suggestions and invitations to take part in joint co-productions, especially when it is in line with CELL's goals.

The name CELL is not an abbreviation and was chosen for the connotation with the cell molecule. It refers to a permeable organic structure that will multiply, grow and shrink with external influences and
hence is a symbolic and appropriate name to describe this flexible and adaptable organisation.

CELL receives structural financial support from the City Council of Rotterdam.
