Kunstnernes Hus (?The Artists? House?) is an artist-run exhibition hall for contemporary art. KH is organised as an independent foundation owned by Norwegian artists. KH opened in 1930 and has ever since been one of Norway?s chief venues for the presentation of Norwegian and international contemporary art

KH is run by a directorship with five members; four are artists, while the fifth member is appointed by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The directorship manages the premises and determines the artistic profile. One of the four artist members of the directorship is appointed as its head, and is employed by the House as its Director

KH has a long tradition of organising major collective exhibitions and important solo shows, in addition to presenting installations and intermedial projects produced specially for KH. KH receives financial support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. KH also hosts two annual shows, both organised by the Association of Norwegian Visual Artists: The National Annual Autumn Exhibition, and the Norwegian Awards Applicants? Exhibition.

KH is located in the city centre, next to the Royal Palace Park. The building, designed by the architects Gudolf Blakstad and Herman Munthe-Kaas, is counted as one of masterpieces of Norwegian functionalism. The 1,100 m2 exhibition area comprises four main spaces: two monumental, downlit halls on the first floor, and two smaller spaces on the ground floor. The Caf? Arcimboldo, located by the entrance, is a popular meeting place. At the back of the building, which formerly housed the art academy, there are six large artist studios, five of which are let to individual artists and/or organisations.
