About Artists Space
One of the first alternative spaces in New York, Artists Space was founded in 1972 to support contemporary artists working in the visual arts, including video, electronic media, performance, architecture and design. The mission of Artists Space is to encourage experimentation, diversity and dialogue in contemporary arts practice, provide an exhibition space for new art and artists, and foster an appreciation for the vital role that artists play in our community.
Artist File Online
The Irving Sandler Artists File is a digitized image database and slide registry that is open to the public free-of-charge, and it is one of the largest and most comprehensive artist registries in the country. The Artists File is not curated and there is no fee to join or view the Artists File.
Up to this point the Artists File has only been available for visitors to Artists Space, but our in-house database is now accessible through the internet. Each artist has two images of their work included in this database and it is searchable by such categories as "medium", "materials", "style", and artists' names. Artists' email information and/or web site links are available for visitors to contact the artists personally. If you find an artist who does not have any email or website information, or their email address doesn't work, please email the Artists File for their information at artfile@artistsspace.org.
Artists featured in this database each have an in-house file at Artists Space with more images and biographical information. For more in-depth research or to view more work by the artists in the database, please make an appointment to visit the Artists File. The file is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 6pm; for an appointment contact Artists File Coordinator Letha Wilson at 212.226.3970 ext. 35. Although there is no fee to use the Artists File, we ask institutions and corporations undertaking research to consider a donation to Artists Space.
Artists File Online Artists: If you are an artist who has work in the Artists File Online and there is an error on your page, or your information has changed, please email Letha at artfile@artistsspace.org. Please email the specific information about the problem and it will be fixed as soon as possible.
If you are an artist in the Artists File whose work does not appear online this is because we do not have a signed waiver from you; please contact Letha to resolve this problem.
Artists are curated from the Artists File for monthly exhibitions on our website at Artists (web) Space.
