About CITYarts
CITYarts empowers children by bringing them together with professional artists to create public art that addresses civic and social issues, impacts their lives, and transforms their communities.
Since its founding in 1968, CITYARTS has engaged nearly 100,000 New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds in the process of designing and creating more than 250 murals, mosaics and sculptures. Special emphasis is given to neighborhoods where access to and participation in the arts is limited.
These projects frequently foster community revitalization by galvanizing businesses, schools, and community organizations into developing youth programs and constructing playgrounds, green gardens and pocket parks.
CITYARTS projects give young people the opportunity to work with and learn from professional artists; under the leadership of Executive Director Tsipi Ben-Haim, their impact has been magnified through in-school and community-based educational activities that help tens of thousands of children to develop social, cognitive, imaginative and collaborative skills; encourage multicultural and inter-generational interaction through art; build self-esteem; and instill a sense of neighborhood ownership.
In 1995, the New York City Police Department recognized CITYARTSÅf accomplishments in reducing neighborhood violence through art, and hailed the organization for making the city a safer place for children.CITYARTS has also garnered special awards from the Disney Corporation, Bravo, and the past four Mayors of New York City.
