(dac) mission statement
The dumbo arts center (dac) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enriching the identity of D.U.M.B.O. as an artists' community. To this end, (dac) promotes the collective work of emerging artists by producing the annual d.u.m.b.o art under the bridge festival, exhibiting group shows in its fine arts gallery, maintaining a slide registry, and collaborating with other organizations to sponsor local arts events.

about (dac)
D.U.M.B.O. is the acronym adopted within New York City that describes the industrial neighborhood "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass" on the Brooklyn waterfront where nearly one thousand artists now work and live. For twenty years artists have moved to this neighborhood because of its loft buildings and proximity to Manhattan's downtown.

In 1997, Joy Glidden founded (dac) to organize the d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival, celebrating and giving exposure to D.U.M.B.O.'s arts community. Each year, over three days in October, performances and events take place in D.U.M.B.O.'s galleries and streets while hundreds of artists open their studios for public viewing. The 2003 festival drew an estimated 200,000 people.

(dac) also maintains a 3,000 sq. ft. gallery space at 30 Washington Street, in the center of D.U.M.B.O., dedicated to group exhibitions of fine arts. At the gallery, (dac) brings together established curators with local artists. Past shows have included, Section 33 with Charlotta Kotik of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and Un Ltd. as well as Bridges with Waqas Wajahat of Knoedler & Company. The slide registry maintained by (dac) is focused almost exclusively on D.U.M.B.O. artists and is free of charge for artists to join.

(dac) also collaborates with other arts organizations in the area to promote broader experimentation in the arts throughout the year, including fine arts exhibitions (David Liss, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art; Beth Finch, Drawing Center; Beth Venn, Curator for the Peter Norton Family Foundation; Kathleen Ford, San Francisco MoMA), and projects with The Korean Ministry of Culture and The Quebec Department of Cultural Affairs.
