FROM SITE

Smack Mellon is a nonprofit arts organization located in the Dumbo area of Brooklyn. Smack Mellon's mission is to nurture and support emerging, under-recognized mid-career and women artists in the creation and exhibition of new work by providing exhibition opportunities, studio workspace, and access to equipment and technical assistance for the realization of ambitious projects.

Smack Mellon's Visual Arts Exhibition Program is at the center of our organization. Designed to advance public interest in the visual arts, the focus of the program is on creative technology-based projects, as well as traditional art forms, and seeks to expose the works of emerging, under-recognized mid-career and women artists. Our current facilities provide for large, ambitious shows that allow each artist ample room to explore and present their work. The gallery space, located at 56 Water Street, is a 6,000 square foot pre Civil War structure that was built in the early 1800s as a foundry. In the 1900s it became the factory for the Manhattan Milling spice company. The scent of spice still lingers in the building. The building has a 40-foot ceiling with beautiful exposed wood beams and a completely unobstructed exhibition space.

The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis in availability of affordable workspace for artists living and working in New York City. The Artist Studio Program provides free studio space with unlimited access and a fellowship to eligible artists for a one-year period. The facility includes: nine artists' studios, a workshop area for metal, wood and general fabrication, Mac workstations with editing, DVD burner and CD read/write capabilities, scanners, DVD and VCR players, monitors and projectors and high-speed Internet access. The program does not provide living space.

The studio facilities, combined with our unique exhibition space, provide artists with the opportunity for artistic exploration on an unparalleled scale. Accordingly, our organization's vision has been critically and artistically acclaimed.
